The key determinant behind the noise of pickleball, is obviously the equipment, but what about the equipment makes it so loud? Similar racquet sports such as tennis, badminton, squash and padel have not got the same backlash that pickleball has received for its noisy nature.

Pickleball paddles are made from materials such as fibreglass and carbon fibre. The ball is a perforated plastic shell with no cushioning. As a result, when these two pieces of equipment meet, it creates a very distinctive and noticeable high pitched sound, causing unhappy neighbours.

Pickleball features rapid and often exchanges at the net. Each point involves multiple shots within the rallies, meaning more of "POP".

Pickleball courts are typically made of concrete or asphalt. These surfaces reflect the sound as opposed to absorbing it. This ultimately amplifies the volume. Within smaller and enclosed spaces, an echo-chamber is created, producing a sound which is not too nice to listen to!
