Why Pickleball Name

Pickleball has a quirky name, and many wonder where it came from. Was it named after a dog named Pickles? Or maybe after the leftover pickle jar that inspired the game’s creation? In this blog, we’ll take you through the history of the name “pickleball” and dispel some common myths.

The sport was created in 1965 by Joe Pritchard, his wife, and their family friend, Bill Bell. The story goes that the game was first played using leftover equipment (hence the “pickle” in pickleball), but another, often quoted explanation is that it was named after Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase after the ball during early games.

While the exact story may remain a bit fuzzy, what’s clear is that the name “pickleball” stuck, and it’s become a beloved part of the game’s identity. So, while we may not know definitively where it came from, we can agree it’s a name that adds character to this increasingly popular sport!
